Chennai Styled Tiffin Sambar

Sambar is always traditional and special dish in south india,especially in TamilNadu. Different flavour compete against each other but nothing can beat the Sambar from Tamilnadu,specifically Chennai. Madras Sambar,as the name goes is available around the season and its best tasted when cooked Toor Dal is used. The blend of spices such as Channa Dal,Coriander Seeds,Long Red Chilies make it more flavor full than the ones used without.

Celebrating the occasion of the newly bought Grinder,I made delicious Sambar to go along with Idly.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

    Toor Dal- 1/2 cup (Cooked and Mashed in the cooker )
    Tamarind- Size of a lemon(Soak in Warm water and extract the pulp from that)
    Vegetables:
    Onion- 1 chopped
    Tomato(s)- 1 or 2 chopped
    Sambar Powder- 1.5 tsp
    Curry Leaves and Coriander Leaves
    Salt and Oil as needed

Tadka:
Mustard Seeds- 1tsp
Long Red Chillies- 1

    Fry and Grind:
    Channa Dal – 1tsp
    Dania/Coriander Seeds- 1 tsp
    Long Red Chillies – 2
    Pepper- 3-4
    Ginger – Small piece

Method:

1) Fry and Grind the above stuff and make paste like.
2) In a kadai with Oil, Fry Onion for few minutes and add Tomatoes. After a while add the tamarind pulp with Sambar Powder with salt.
3) Once it has been boiled for about 10-15 minutes, add the grind paste with cooked dal.
4)Boil for few more minutes, and do the tadka.
Garnish with Coriander and Curry leaves
